What is your favorite yoga pose and why?

Wheel is my favorite pose.  It opens my back and chest and makes me feel very strong.

How long have you been practicing yoga?

12 years

How did you first encounter yoga and fall in love with yoga?

A friend forced me to join him for my first yoga class.  I started off my journey very skeptical.  I soon fell in love with the practice as I discovered my strength and flexibility, as well as the instant relaxation I find each time I am on my mat.

Tell us about your focus during your practice or what is your personal mantra?  

My life is fast paced.  Most of my day is spent on the go, thinking about what’s next or what is left to be done.  My yoga practice is the one time in the day when I slow down and truly focus on the moment - being present, breathing deeply, and moving through the poses with strength and intention.

How has yoga affected you off the mat?  

I was an adult with many childhood fears when I began my yoga practice.  Not only has yoga helped me to overcome these fears (like falling over when upside down), it has taught me a focus and a mindfulness that I apply when I face challenges in the rest of my life.

Do you have any advice or tips to give to beginners or to people who haven’t tried yoga yet?

Try a class with an open mind.  Even if it seems challenging at first, don’t give up.  Yoga is definitely a journey.  Experience different teachers and styles until you find what you like best.

I am a New Orleans girl who loves spicy food.  While I’ve been in New Jersey for 14 years, you won’t find me routing for any local teams as I am an avid fan of the New Orleans Saints (Who Dat) and the Texas Longhorns (Hook ‘em Horns) and am slowly brainwashing my husband and children to do the same.
